Nagyova books place in semifinals

DUBAI — Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia defeated Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals of the ITF Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge at the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa here yesterday.

Nagyova easily took the opening set 6-1 but her opponent hit back to win the next set 7-6 to level the scores 1-1. Kleinova, however, retired in the deciding set with Nagyova leading 2-0.

Eighth seed Jelena Kostanic of Croatia also notched up an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine for a place in the semifinals. Kateryna and her older sister Alona, meanwhile, have made it into the semifinals of the doubles after beating Lourdes Dominguez Lino (Spain)/Arantxa Parra Santonja (Spain) 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.

The Bondarenko sisters will now face Gabriela Navratilova/Hana Sromova, both from the Czech Republic, who beat Montinee Tangphong (Thailand)/Thassha Vitayaviroj (Thailand) 6-2, 7-6.
